Reading the symbols

Roman numerals use seven letters with fixed values: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1000. Normally you add them from left to right, so XVI is 10 plus 5 plus 1, which is 16. The twist is the subtractive rule: when a smaller symbol sits before a larger one, you subtract it. That is why IV is 4, IX is 9, XL is 40, XC is 90, CD is 400 and CM is 900.

Limits of the system

Standard Roman numerals only go up to 3999, written MMMCMXCIX, because there is no single symbol for 5000 and you never repeat M four times in normal notation. There is also no zero and no way to write fractions or negative numbers. Valid numerals follow strict patterns, so IIII and IC are not correct even though people occasionally write them.   • IX at the 9 position on a watch dial simply means 9 (10 minus 1).

A bit of history

Roman numerals were used across the Roman Empire and remained Europe's everyday number system until Hindu-Arabic numerals gradually replaced them for calculation from the late Middle Ages onward.

Did you know?

Many clock and watch faces show four as IIII rather than the subtractive IV — a long-standing horological tradition usually explained by visual balance with the VIII opposite it, though its exact origin is still debated.

It accepts the Roman symbols I, V, X, L, C, D and M and applies standard subtractive rules. It does not reject unusual orderings, so enter well-formed numerals for best results.
