Aspect ratio is the shape of an image or screen — the relationship between width and height. Knowing it helps you crop and resize cleanly.
What the numbers mean
A ratio like 16:9 means 16 units of width for every 9 of height. It describes shape, not size — a 16:9 image is the same shape whether it’s tiny or huge.
Common ratios
16:9 is standard for video and most screens; 4:3 is older TV and many photos; 1:1 is square (social posts); 21:9 is ultrawide/cinematic. Matching the right ratio avoids black bars or cropping.
Resizing without distortion
