Why stacked discounts do not add

When two discounts apply one after another, they do not simply sum. A 20 percent cut followed by a 10 percent cut is not 30 percent off, because the second reduction is taken from the already-reduced price. This tool multiplies the remaining fractions: 80 percent of the price, then 90 percent of that, leaving 72 percent, which is a real discount of 28 percent, not 30.

Order, and honest comparison

For pure percentage discounts the order does not change the final price, since multiplication is commutative: 20 then 10 lands at the same place as 10 then 20. Order only starts to matter when a fixed-amount coupon is mixed in, which this tool does not model.

Real-world examples

  • A $200 jacket at 30% off then an extra 20% coupon costs $200 × 0.7 × 0.8 = $112, an effective 44% off — not 50%.
  • A 25% discount followed by a 10% coupon on $80 gives $80 × 0.75 × 0.9 = $54 (37.5% off in total).
  • Two successive 50% discounts leave 25% of the original price, not zero.

Did you know?

Stacked percentage discounts never simply add up: two 20% discounts applied one after another total 36% off, not 40%, because the second is taken from the already-reduced price.

Why isn’t 20% + 10% equal to 30%?

The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. So stacked discounts are always less than their sum.
