What score you still need
This tool works backwards from a goal. You give it your current grade, the grade you want overall, and how much the final exam is worth as a percentage of the course. It then solves for the score you must earn on that final. The logic is straightforward: your existing work already accounts for part of the total, and the final has to make up the gap, scaled by its weight.
Because the final is usually only a fraction of the course, its weight has a large effect on the answer, which is why entering the correct percentage matters.
Reading the result honestly
If the calculator tells you that you need more than 100 percent on the final, the target is out of reach with that exam alone, and you may need extra credit or a lower goal. A negative or very low required score means you have already secured the grade and could pass the final with room to spare. Use it early in the term to set realistic targets. Real-world examples
- With 85% going in, a final worth 40% and a target of 90% overall, you need (90 − 0.6×85)/0.4 = 97.5% on the final.
- At 78% now, a final worth 25% and a target of 80% overall means you need about 86% on the final.
- If passing is 60% and you sit at 55% with a 30%-weight final left, you must score at least about 71.7%.
FAQ
What if the result is over 100%?
It means your target is not achievable with that final weight — even a perfect exam falls short. Lower the target or note the maximum you can reach.
