Running Pace Calculator

Calculate your running pace per kilometer and your speed.

5:00 /km
Pace5:00 min/km
Speed12 km/h

Enter the distance you ran and the time it took, and this calculator gives your pace in minutes per kilometer along with your average speed. It’s perfect for planning race targets or checking how a training run went.

Formula / method

pace = time ÷ distance · speed = distance ÷ (time ÷ 60)

Examples

5 km in 25 min
5:00 /km
10 km in 55 min
5:30 /km

Pace versus speed

Running pace is the time you take to cover one kilometre or mile, written as minutes and seconds, for example 5:30 per km. Speed is the inverse: distance covered per hour. Enter your distance and total time and the calculator returns both, since runners plan by pace but treadmills and race results often show speed.

A pace of 5:00 per km equals a speed of 12 km/h, so knowing both lets you set a treadmill or read a race split with confidence.

Using pace to plan races

Once you know your target pace, you can project finish times: a 5:30 per km pace over a 42.195 km marathon works out to roughly 3 hours 52 minutes. This makes pace the key number for pacing long events evenly rather than starting too fast.

Keep your units consistent, since pace per kilometre and pace per mile are not interchangeable (a mile is about 1.609 km). To convert your resulting speed into other units, the Speed Converter handles km/h, mph and m/s.

Where it's used

  • Setting a target pace for a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or marathon
  • Translating a per-kilometre or per-mile pace into a treadmill speed
  • Checking splits during interval or tempo training
  • Projecting a likely race finish time from a training run
  • Comparing today's run against a previous effort on the same route

Real-world examples

  • Running 5 km in 25 minutes is a 5:00 /km pace and a speed of 12 km/h
  • A 10 km run in 55 minutes gives a 5:30 /km pace
  • Holding 5:30 /km over the full 42.195 km marathon works out to roughly a 3 hour 52 minute finish

Did you know?

On 6 May 1954 at Oxford's Iffley Road track, Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, clocking 3:59.4 which is a blistering pace of about 2:29 per kilometre.

FAQ

How do I convert pace to miles?

Multiply your km pace by 1.609 to get the per-mile pace, or use the Speed Converter to switch km/h to mph.
