A bit of history

The metre was first defined by the French National Assembly in 1791 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole along the meridian through Paris; a surveying expedition by Delambre and Mechain (1792-1799) fixed its length, and a platinum standard bar was deposited in 1799.
