Three scales, one idea
Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin all measure the same thing on different scales. Celsius is anchored to water freezing at 0 and boiling at 100; Fahrenheit puts those points at 32 and 212; Kelvin starts at absolute zero, the coldest temperature physically possible, and is written without a degree sign.
The formulas

A bit of history
The Fahrenheit scale was proposed in 1724 by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, the Celsius (centigrade) scale in 1742 by Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius, and the absolute Kelvin scale in 1848 by William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin), who wanted a scale anchored to thermodynamics rather than to water.

Anders Celsius originally set his scale upside down, with 0 at water's boiling point and 100 at freezing; it was flipped to the familiar 0-freezes, 100-boils order around 1744, after his death.
