How to Calculate a Tip (and Split the Bill)
Tipping doesn’t need a calculator at the table — but it helps to know the percentages and a couple of mental shortcuts for splitting the bill.
Common tip percentages
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax total is typical for table service, with 18–20% for good service. Many other countries tip less or round up instead — norms vary widely by place.
Mental shortcuts
For 10%, move the decimal one place left (a 45 bill → 4.50). Double it for 20%, or add half again for 15%. The Tip Calculator does it exactly and can split across any number of people.
Tax vs tip
Tip is usually figured on the pre-tax amount, while sales tax is added separately. If you’re also estimating tax, the Sales Tax Calculator pairs well with the tip tool.
