How much to tip

Tipping customs vary by country and service. In the United States, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is typical for restaurant table service, with 18% a common default. In many European and Asian countries a service charge is already included and tipping is smaller or optional. When in doubt, check the bill for an existing service charge before adding more.

Splitting the bill fairly

This calculator can divide the total across any number of people so everyone pays an equal share of both the bill and the tip. For an uneven split — where people ordered very differently — total each person’s items first, then apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal so the gratuity stays proportional.

Where it's used

  • Splitting a restaurant bill and tip evenly among friends
  • Deciding a fair gratuity for a taxi, salon, or delivery driver
  • Calculating a tip on the pre-tax rather than post-tax amount
  • Working out each person's share for a large group dinner
  • Quickly checking a suggested-tip line printed on a receipt

Real-world examples

  • Four friends splitting a $120 dinner with a 20% tip, or $144 total and $36 each
  • Adding an 18% tip to a $65 salon service, an $11.70 gratuity
  • Tipping 15% on a $28 taxi fare, about $4.20
  • A group of six leaving 20% on a $250 bill and splitting it to roughly $50 each

FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Customs vary. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is also common. Enter whichever amount you prefer.
